Robert Butler (1954-2014) represents a number of genres in art, he is a member of the Highwaymen movement in Florida, an accomplished outsider artist, folk arists and an African American Arist who worked in the 1970-2010 time period. The Highwaymen, also referred to as the Florida Highwaymen, are a group of 26 African American landscape artists in Florida. While two of the original artists, Harold Newton, and Alfred Hair, received training from Alfred “Beanie” Backus, the remaining members were largely self-taught. It is believed they as a group, may have created a body of work of over 200,000 paintings. The highwaymen group acquired this name because they sold their work along the side of Florida's highways, since they could not find representation in local stores and galleries due to their race.
 
Many of the highwaymen started creating art to tell the story of their religion, but then were encouraged through the group to paint landscapes to increase their marketability as the sold their plein air paintings either on the side of the road or door to door. Fame and renown did come to the highwaymen as all 26 Florida Highwaymen were inducted into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame in 2004.
 
This beutiful print is a large 2.4.5x34" framed lithographic print from Robert Butler (1954-2014), a second wave member of Highwayman art movement from Florida. The image of artist signature and 1976 are in within the print, in the lower right-hand corner. Title not noted. Image is in excellent clean condition of wooden swamp and ducks in flight, lots of bright blue tones which is in the manner of the highwayman style. The print is dual matted, under glass with rustic wooden frame. Framing has gaps which are part of the frame, not damage. Back of framing has hanging hardware, back dust cover has multiple tears. Great image not often seen from earlier period of this well-known artist. The visible image 17x26, and this piece is over 10 lbs, so will need a wall stud or spacer.
