So many people hear the word "art" and think of swirling patterns or idyllic scenes, but there are artpieces whose entire reason for existance is to have a bit of an edge and a bit of sass. These satirical pieces are created to make the viewer think and evaluate their own perspective. Many of these address politics or other social movements. And as you dissect them, you find that many of their references go to a number of layers. This complexity makes looking at the image quite fun, because what you see on the surface is usually a far cry from what the artist was really saying. Having images like this are fun because you see something different as you live with the piece longer and it also encourages discussions when guests come to call.
The image of "The Law Suit" is one of a number of variations from an English print attributed to J. Bright, originally published in the 1700's under "The Law Suit" in which a plantiff and defendant pull at either side of a spotted cow, while a judge looks on and the lawyer sits upon a milking stool. In this signed version of a Goss Print from the 1910-1930's the judge has been omitted and the images do not have identification but that doesn't limit the tongue in cheek humor of the image, where the people going to court are rail thin and working so hard, while the lawyer sits and milks the cow. Anyone who has had the "pleasure" of the current US legal system will have a rueful chuckle at this image.
This color lithographic image is under glass, matted and framed in thin light colored wood. The visable image has no damage and no toning. It is slighly waved under the mat. The dust cover is intact and has a stamp from a framer in Santa Fe. Wire hanging hardware is included. Exterior frame size 19.75"x13.3", image 14.5"x8.5"
